Shadow Council Biographies

Dave Kibler
Dave Kibler has been a resident of Colorado since 1961 and lived in the Golden area for most of that time. He attended Colorado State University, Metropolitan State College, and Red Rocks Community College. Mr. Kibler is an Engineering Technician and has been been employed by the U.S. Geological Survey for 34 years. He has been married for 28 years and hahas 3 grown children. Mr. Kibler's hobies include mountain climbing, auto repair, and reading.

Laura McCall

Laura McCall, Ph.D., is Professor of History and member of the Honors Faculty at Metropolitan State College of Denver. She received her doctorate from The University of Michigan and her B.A. from Northwestern University. McCall's honors include Phi Beta Kappa, Who's Who in the American West, and the 1996 Professor of the Year. She spearheaded the one percent growth initiative for Golden and has been active in the Save The Mesas organization. Dr. McCall served on the Land Use and Economic Development Group for the Future Jeffco Comprehensive Plan as well as the Development Review Process Implementation Group through the Jefferson County Planning Department.

Bob Nelson

Bob Nelson has lived in Golden for over 30 years. He is one of those dreaded transplated Californians. He was employed at the Coors Brewing Company for 27 years as a mechanical engineer until his retirement in 1995. Mr. Nelson served on the Golden Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years and on the National Ski Patrol for 20 years. A US Army vetran, Mr. Nelson served with the Army Engineers in Korea. His wife, Joyce, works for the Jefferson County Sheriff's office. His hobbies include: woodworking/deck building, hiking, snowshoeing, and vegetable gardening.

Don Parker

Don Parker is a native Coloradoan, raised in rural northeastern Colorado near the town of Sedgwick. He and his wife Mary run a property investment and management business. He has worked an environmental consultant and for the Environmental Protection Agency in the areas of water quality, hazardous waste and chemical regulation, and cleanups including on Rocky Flats and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. He was one of the leaders of Save the Mesas formed to save North and South Table Mountains for Open Space. He was a candidate for State Representative in 1992 and 1998, raising issues of government tax subsidies that promote sprawl. He has degrees in environmental biology (Bachelors--University of Colorado), environmental engineering (Masters-Johns Hopkins University) and law (Juris Doctor--University of Denver). He joined the shadow City Council hoping to promote more realistic thinking regarding the costs and benefits of development and to put focus on the need for a more responsive government at the Golden City level. He said he is "looking forward to working with Mayor McCall, Mayor pro tem Simpson and the other councilors."

Bill Simpson

Bill Simpson, Ph.D, is an instructor in the Philosophy Department at Metropolitan State College of Denver. A fifth-generation Golden native, Dr. Simpson is married to Barbara Goodrich, a professional harpist. Dr. Simpson attended Southern Illinois University, California State University, and the the University of Colorado. His hobbies include vegetable gardening, solo camping, and local history. His great, great grandfather, William C. Simpson, was Golden's first town marshal.

Jean Starling

Jean Starling holds a degree from the University of Colorado in Psychology and Fine Arts. As a fine liberal arts representative, she is currently employed as the Research Development Coordinator at the Colorado School of Mines, Office of Research and Development. Married to Brian Starling and a Golden resident for 22 years, her interests include gardening, hiking, and Tai Chi.

Valerie Walker

Valerie Walker is a part-time instructor of Geology at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood. Ms. Walker has lived in Golden with her husband Jonathan (Jake) Coats, a Ph.D. Candidate in Physics at the Colorado School of Mines, since 1983. Their two children, David and Jonathan, attend Jefferson County Public Schools. Ms. Walker has a B.A. in Geology from Miami University of Ohio and a M.A. in Geology and a Professional Degree in Hydrogeology from the Colorado School of Mines in Golden Colorado. Her work experience, both in the public and private sector, includes computer programming, coal and natural gas supply analysis, and oil and gas exploration and production. She has been active in both the Shelton and Mitchel PTA, the Mitchel Accountability Committee, the Shelton CDM and worked successfully on the passage of the 1% Growth Initiative in Golden in 1995. Ms. Walker's hobbies include skiing and hiking.
