The mission of the Social Justice Committee is to inform and educate congregational members and the community in areas of social concerns as they represent our stated mission of creating a more caring, sustainable world, promoting peace and justice, and recognizing the interdependence of all life. Okay, so what does that mean?
We:
- Foster communication, education, advocacy, and action on social justice issues
- Facilitate setting priorities and direction in the use of social justice resources within FUS
- Identify social justice issues appropriate for congregational positions and action
- Provide opportunities for Society members and friends to be active in community and global social justice initiatives
- Support UUA social initiatives such as “Standing on the Side of Love”
- Integrate social justice into the overall life of the congregation
Current or recent social justice activities:
- Support and leadership for the local Faith Leaders in Action (FLIA) group of progressive faith leaders and clergy for the past four years
- Support of an immigration coalition as an outgrowth of FLIA
- Participation in the counter-demonstration against the Westboro Baptist Church, a recognized hate group, which recently came to Pueblo to protest the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples
- Inclusion of environmental justice and sustainability in all our programs, and as much as possible promote them in all our activities (recycling, using organic products, etc.)
- Collecting of food and other items for Cooperative Car, a local homeless shelter and food bank, on an ongoing basis
- Involvement in organizations established to enhance the availability of services on the East Side of Pueblo, an area in need of advocacy
