Our Credentials

Meek and benevolent as we may be, GOLDENCO.ORG is now the most feared website in Golden.

And what have we done? Well, we've (a) made Golden City Council and 1% Growth Initiative campaign contributor lists available on the Internet; (b) posted Mayor Schenck's public and private utterances on Nike development on South Table Mountain; (c) provided readers lists of board members of a variety of of local organizations that further developer interests; and, yes, that business about the clones.

And now just look at the sterling endorsements our friends at the Greater Golden Chamber of Commerce and the Golden City Council have posted to the GOLDENCO.ORG list serve:

Chris Powers, Golden Chamber of Commerce

I checked out your web site after reading about it in the Transcript. I hope you keep it going. I plan to visit it periodically for an alternative view of developments in Golden.

As a Chamber Board member and Chair of the Chamber's Economic Development Council, I try to learn as much as I can about the city, and your perspective of developments I see from an entirely different angle is interesting.

Like many alternative communication vehicles, however, yours seems to me to suffer from a narrowness that will affect its credibility over the long term. By that, I mean that the issues and the developments you cover are nowhere near as simple as you make them out to be, and the people you portray as merely clones, all working blindly to bring more development to the city are far more complex than you make them out to be. That is what normally happens when one watches developments from the outside.

It is very easy to put isolated happenings together and come up with a story that is apparently cohesive and indisputable, if you want to believe it strongly enough....

My point is simply this. No matter how much you think only you have the "real" story, you don't, and there is no way that you can as long as you write as an outsider.

What I'm hoping is that, over time, you'll see that the issues, the developments and the people are all more complex than you now portray them. Some recognition of that in your site will give it more credibility and perhaps keep it from becoming a place for only the disaffected, the frustrated and the paranoid.

Just my two cents worth.

Councilman Webb Aldrich, Ward 4

I have to agree with Mr. Powers observations as I too share his point of view on the content of the website.

It is not about free speech, which I embrace with every fiber of my being, but the loss of credibility that is suffered when one realizes that the Goldenco website is fraught with errors, omissions, misinformation and conspiracy theories. . . .

As elected officials we try to listen to every voice, we realize that not everybody will agree or have the same point of view. However when disagreements or alternative viewpoints are presented in a civil, rational, adult manner then we can debate them, find consensus or even agree to disagree.

It is when they take the form of nastiness, innuendo or outright personal attacks (I know about these) that they lose their credibility and are ignored.

I also know all of the people on the "clones" list and the common denominator among this fine group of people that I am proud to call my friends is their love and commitment to our community. These are people who give of their time and energy to contribute to not only candidates they may choose to support, but also in dozens of efforts to make Golden a better place including efforts aimed at kids and feeding and clothing those less fortunate in our community and don't for a minute think there is not a lot of this work to do.

So if you want to make a positive contribution do as Mr. Powers suggests and become involved, be an insider, a contributor and find out what I know, that a lot of great people are accomplishing a lot of good things.
