October 2000:
The Golden Waffle Award
As surely as the swallows return to Capistrano in
the spring, politicians begin misrepresenting themselves
round about mid-October. Rock-ribbed Republicans suddenly
become the true defenders of widows and orphans, and
humanistic Democrats begin sitting in on Promise Keepers
meetings and speculating that society really does provide
young people an important lesson by killing
killers.
It is in the spirit of these odd, autumnal times
that we at GOLDENCO.ORG announce the winners of our first
annual Golden Waffle Award:
Tom
Tancredo,
the 6th Congressional District
incumbent, earned
the coveted Golden Waffle for Excellence in
Political Shapeshifting. Back in 1994 Tancredo
delivered a speech before the Guardians of American
Liberty, a group identified by the Southern Poverty
Law Center as a right-wing militia organization with
links to anti-Semitic groups. Tancredo opined, "I must
tell you that I believe with all my heart that there
is a conflict in our culture today that is so very
deep and so very significant that it'll be played out
really in one of two ways. It will be played out
either at the ballot box or in the streets." Now our
culture warrior is all sweetness and light--at least
on TV. Tom, baby, what happened to your fire?
John
Witwer,
Golden's state representative (HD 25)
wins the Golden Waffle for Excellence in Pot/Kettle
Equivocation. Witwer advertises himself as a
friend of education and foe of telemarketing, and
calls people liars who beg to disagree. But wait! The
Colorado PTA gives Witwer a zero (0, nada, goose egg)
for his votes on educational issues, and he voted
against this year's anti-telemarketing bill.
Johnny, we hardly know ye!
