WELCOME. THE 1999 CLEAN AIRPORT SUMMIT will focus upon the key environmental issues associated with airport growth. Air travel is the fastest growing segment of the transportation industry. It is projected to continue to grow at a rate of more than 5% per year. 32 of the nation's 50 biggest airports are expanding and 60 of the largest 100 airports are adding or extending runways. In metropolitan areas starved for land, this in most cases means building more capacity into existing sites that are commonly surrounded by development. This juxtaposition has brought environmental and ground transportation issues to the forefront as airports, communities, and regulatory agencies strive to balance the needs of the traveling public with concerns about environmental impacts.
The Clean Airport Summit has been organized as a problem solving forum. Participants will be comprised of leaders from the airport, aviation, environmental, health, transportation, and regulatory communities. Our agenda is ambitious. We will focus upon four primary areas: Air quality, airport access and ground transportation, water quality, and noise. Our goal is to use expert panelists to help engage the audience and tap your expertise in finding solutions to the environmental challenges of airport growth.
The Hyatt Regency Hotel at McCormick Place in Chicago will provide a comfortable venue for the event. Please register early because April is Chicago's peak travel month, rooms are scarce, and we have reserved a limited number of rooms at very attractive rates.
I hope you will take advantage of the many experts and wealth of knowledge assembled for this event and that you will join with us in "addressing the issues of airport growth."
