I would like to thank each and everyone of you for volunteering one skill or another in our efforts to put a local union in place here in the Denver/Boulder area. As I know that we are all busy, I promise not to overload any individual with burdensome requests. Given the fact that there are now six people who are willing to serve on an ad-hoc steering committee, this should not pose a problem for any of us. I have also been calling additional folks to recruit assistance on this effort. It would be great if all of you could place the following names, E-Mails and telephone numbers in your computers for this informal steering committee: Name E-Mail Telephone (all 303) Doug Vaughan dougvaughan@compuserve.com 455-9429 Doug Ohmans jshell@netcom.com 279-3253 Steve Marsh smarsh11@aol.com 692-9774 Dean Myerson deangr@plinet.com 543-0672 Dennis DeMaio dpdemaio@aol.com 480-9268 Frank Kogan edcasual@earthlink.net 744-9791 Steve Marsh proposes that we simply do the (nominal) paperwork necessary to form a Denver sub-local. Do you all agree? The rough requirements for forming a sub-local are: -membership of at least 30 dues paying members (we have about 45) -a steering committee, which includes a Chair and a treasurer -approved budget (funded by the At-Large Local) -a six month plan and a three year plan toward becoming a local (this three year requirement is very loose. Tucson has been a sub-local for at least seven years) -By-Laws (We have boiler plates for these) As Co-Chair of our At-Large Local, I can process the paperwork on all this if folks agree that we should move forward. At the June convention, our local will be discussing the various areas that may be ready for sub-locals. I would be happy to put Denver in the mix here if there is consensus to do so. There are at least a few good reasons for forming a formal sub-local: 1. a formal budget is provided by the At-Large Local. 2. Delegate slot(s) would be reserved for the sub-local at our annual convention. 3. Sub-locals often have priority for funding of events and other activities in the local. The idea is to focus energy and resources in sub-locals to help them form locals. Let me know what folks think about this. I realize that some of you have indicated that your committment would be limited to certain activities, and that is fine.Recruiting new activists to fill in the missing gaps will be a work in progress. Before doing any formal filing, I would certainly be sure to recruit the only formal two positions (Chair and a Treasurer) that are required under this structure. Fraternally, Dennis DeMaio |
