The pamphlet that PACE put out concerning the Right to work Law in Alabama was incorrect. The actual law is as follows: "It is hereby declared to be the public policy of Alabama that the right of persons to work shall not be denied or abridged on account of membership or nonmembership in any labor union or labor organization. (Enacted August 28, 1953.)" this only means you can't be fired because of membership (or nonmembership) in the union. Look it up yourself at http://www.nrtw.org . This is a law protecting workers from forced union membership as a condition of employment.
Everyone who is zealously supporting the union campaign here at Sylacauga is really only interested in one thing: more money for their own department. I heard a group of people complaining that another department made "only" 60 cents less than they do, and they didn't care if anyone got a raise but their department. I thought a union is supposed to be a group of people striving for a common goal. But everyone is only wanting the union for their own selfish purpose. A lot of people are so busy worrying about what other employees are making, they hardly have time to earn what they are being paid now. Today I had to handle the work load alone for over an hour while a group of five of my co-workers stood around complaining about their pay. And they got paid for that hour of griping.
I am not going to voice support for PACE because the only information I have received from them is clever little slogans, pamphlets that slander and insult every single person in management, and mispelled papers telling me I work for "evil puppetmasters". I haven't gotten any real information about them, such as who they are, what they have done for other companies, and exactly how they plan to do what they claim.
One of the main things I hear in support of PACE is the "Employment at Will" clause, where Imerys can fire anyone at anytime. You want me to be afraid they will fire me for nothing, and run to get a union to protect me. But one thing I have noticed about this company is that it is not easy to get fired. I have seen people screw up badly and stay on here, people who would be fired instantly almost anywhere else. I know of guys who cost the company thousands of dollars in customer complaints, and were defended by their bosses because they were good workers. These were not "company men" or brown nosers, either, but actual hard working guys who did their jobs the way they are supposed to. I know of a bulkloader who laid out and hid in break rooms during his shift. He expected to get fired at any time, and didn't really care...but it took a few months, and several warnings before he was ever fired.
Is it not true that if we go union, they will evaluate our jobs to match payrates with the amount of responsibility associated with a job? If so, then it might be ugly. Some of the jobs with very little responsibilites have the same tech level as the ones with a lot. You can't deny that some jobs around here are overpaid, while some are underpaid. What if they decide your job is one of the less critical ones? Our union will be a divided one, with each department looking after their own interests.(Just like the way it is now) A union like that will never be strong.
