ATLANTA, June 2, 2000 (Business Wire) - Kaolin and carbonate suppliers are faced with rising prices of energy and labor, creating a need to raise prices for kaolin and carbonates. Effective for all shipments from July 15, 2000, IMERYS will increase prices by 3 percent to 5 percent for kaolin and ground calcium carbonates.
According to Michael Mack, president of IMERYS' worldwide paper division: "Spiraling energy costs have raised manufacturing costs. This fact, combined with higher operational and labor costs, have brought about the need for IMERYS to marginally increase prices."

Mack notes that "IMERYS continues to reduce costs through rationalization of our industrial facilities, and streamlining our organization and purchasing functions to be more efficient and effective. These actions will support our effort to minimize price increases over time."

"In Europe many customers have already been contacted regarding the price change and we will be contacting customers in North America during June," said Gregg Jones, director of Global Marketing for IMERYS.

IMERYS is a leading multi-pigment resource in the business of kaolin and carbonates for paper, focused on helping paper producers build differentiated products, markets, and profitability. Today, IMERYS is a $2.5 billion company with more than $900 million in annual sales to the paper industry.

IMERYS holds key kaolin reserves for paper in Cornwall, England; Middle Georgia, U.S.; Capim, Brazil; and Pittong, Australia. These properties and advanced manufacturing facilities represent the largest investment of this kind for paper minerals.

IMERYS also has 25 ground calcium carbonate (GCC) facilities in all papermaking regions, and has a growing position in precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), including a 45 percent share of the coating PCC market in North America.
