Family and Union Benefits

There has been talk on this site about, "How can a Union help my family?", and "What is best for my family?" Lets start with money..
(1) The wage gap between Union and Non-Union is about $170.00 a week, on an annual basis, Union advantage is $8,840.00. These figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (1997).
(2) A Union contract provides a family with more than additional income. Members enjoy longer paid vacations and more holidays.
(3) Unions negotiate employer-paid pension plans for their members so they can enjoy retirement. The price tag on these benefits are almost twice what Non-Union workers receive.
(4) Your wages and benefits are in a signed contract, the fewer benefits that Non-Union workers receive can be taken away at any time by the unilateral decision of management.
(5) A contract gives you a grievance process that takes up any issues you might have against management, supervisor's abusive language, unsafe working conditions, favoritism, racist and sexist discrimination, unwarranted disciplinary actions and firings to name a few.
(6) Job security is a top priority in Union shops. When companies merge, they slash their work force to save money. In non-union shops they decide to hire younger workers and contractors to work longer and harder for less. A Union contract has ways to protect workers. Employers who insist on layoffs are obligated to give the Union advance notice. In such cases, Unions usually offer alternative proposals that may prevent or reduce the number of employees to be laid off.
(7) Your seniority (in a Union shop) means something. The company cannot lay you off and retain a lower paid newcomer. When layoffs are done by seniority, most Union contracts have a severance pay package written in. All laid off employees have recall rights before any new employees can be hired.
These are a few ways a Union can protect your job,benefits and wages, thus helping your family. With 13 million members and growing, all these people can't be wrong. On June 22, the decision will be yours. Will you decide to PROTECT your job and your FAMILY or will you listen to the company and their anti-Union attorney. You have some of the facts now. DO THE RIGHT THING.. VOTE YES!!!!
