STATUS REPORT - CROWN ADOPT-A-STATION

The 132nd Annual Session of the Virginia Baptist State Convention met in Richmond, Virginia, May 10-14, 1999 at the Holiday Inn Select, Koger South Conference Center with Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns, President presiding.

Some of the guest speakers were: Dr. George McCalep, Atlanta, GA; Dr. William J. Shaw, Philadelphia, Pa, who is running for President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; Dr. Roscoe Cooper, Sr., General Secretary of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc; the Honorable Rev. Dwight C. Jones, Delegate 70th District, Richmond and Henrico, and Pastor, First Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. Other speakers included: Mr. Jerry Oliver, Chief of Police, Richmond, Virginia; the Honorable Mark L. Earley, Attorney General Commonwealth of Virginia, and Mr. Norvell Robinson from the Mayor's office, City of Richmond. These are just a few of the honored speakers.

I would like to thank Dr. Guns, officers, and convention members for giving me their support in our Adopt-A-Station program against Crown Petroleum. I would like to thank Dr. Antrynette S. Walker, President of the Women's Auxiliary to the Virginia Baptist State Convention, and Deacon William A. Cooper, President of the Virginia Laymen's League for allotting me the time to speak during their sessions, Also, I would like to thank Dr. Guns for his support in helping me to get our Adopt-A-Station program started in the Tidewater area. We are planing a kick-off rally in the Tidewater area in the upcoming weeks. Dr. Guns will be introducing me to pastors and other leaders in the community, and will give me a time slot on the National Crusade for Christ Program.

In Richmond, we are passing out leaflets at one to three stations a week. I would like to thank radio stations, WREJ and WKJS for a wonderful job with the ad, " Say No to Racism, No to Sexism, and No to Union Busting". We are getting call after call about our Adopt-A-Station Program. Also, I want to acknowledge CWA Local 2201; CWA Local 2260; the Richmond Chapter APRI; AFL-CIO Richmond Regional Labor Council; PACE Local 2-0747; PACE Local 2-1553; PACE Local 2-0467; UAW Local 2123; PACE Local 2-0699; PACE Local 2-0486; and Dwight Hagans, Arlene Long, and Rose Simms for their help.

The Northern Virginia CLC is helping to adopt stations in Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg. In North Carolina, we met with the Triangle CLC of Raleigh and Triad CLC of Greensboro, and the program there is catching on thanks to Kathy Howell of the North Carolina AFL-CIO.
