The Sixth Annual Labor/Religion Roundtable
Luncheon/Seminar was held in Houston, Texas, Thursday, June 22, 2000. Those in attendance were PACE Region VI Vice President Jim Byrd, International Representatives J. M. Breaux, Andrew Shelton, Harris County AFL-CIO, CLC President Dale Wortham, locked out Crown Group Chairman Alvin Freeman and several locked out PACE members. The National Baptist Convention Labor Relations Department awarded the locked out workers of Crown Central Petroleum "The Martin Luther King Drum Major Award" for the 4 1/2 battle for justice in their workplace. The N.B.C. has pledged to support the locked out workers in those states where Crown has stations and spread the word to its more than eight million members to not buy Crown gas or its products. Jim Byrd and Alvin Freeman gave speeches to a crowd of 150 religious leaders and union members. A special thanks goes out to Rev. James Orange, Rev. W. L. Shaw and Rev. B. L. Mitchell, Jr. for their ongoing support during the struggle. |
