Columbia, SC AFL-CIO Legislative Conference

I would like to send many thanks to President Donna S. Dewitt AFL-CIO for the invitation to attend the legislative conference on March 14,2000, and for having Crown Petroleum boycott on the agenda.

The forum went very well and was successful. James Broaddus made the introduction; Alvin Freeman made a spectacular report, statistics, and reason for the Crown Central Petroleum boycott.

I wish you could have seen the expression on the faces of the representatives who attended that conference! To them, it was like a horror story, and unbearable to find out how insensitive Crown is.

The forum was so overwhelming that every person in session agreed to help in solidarity. I explained how we all could help. A day of solidarity has been proclaimed on April 8, 2000, with locked out workers in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Contact me at 770/994-3415. In Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Maryland contact James Broaddus at 804/355-9153. In Maryland and Washington, DC contact Ed Rothstein at 410/837-7906 and in Alabama contact Derrick Combs at 205/794-6214.

Thank you South Carolina for your commitment. Thanks to all the local unions and CLC President; Darrell Curry, Public Relations Representative; Vickie Williams and Irene Pickard with CWA; President David Hovis, PACE Local 3-1924; J.D. Johnson; and, Teamster Local 509 Ike Holman. Thanks also to the locals and organizations whose names were not mentioned for their support and commitment on April 8.

Solidarity forever,
Gladys Haley
Coordinator
