| The Boycott in Birmingham is alive and well due to the work of Derrick Combs (RWDSU official), Linda Miller (President of the Birmingham chapter of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute), Frank Paine (President of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists), and Sharon Payne (RWDSU official). Six Crown stations are regularly picket by a core of volunteers, and more stations are expected to be adopted soon. Special thanks as always to Ludie and Euela.
Derrick Combs, the volunteer Crown Boycott Coordinator for Birmingham, has made a video tape of a day spent picketing a Crown gas station. One highlight is when a motorist runs out of gas, as he turns around to avoid crossing the picket line. Derrick lends him his car, so he can go to the next gas station to obtain a gallon of gas. Derrick has arranged meetings this week with two ministers, who want to bring the Crown Boycott into their churches. All the folks in Birmingham give a big HELLO to Brother Danny Duncan, a locked out Crown worker who spent a couple of months in Birmingham to teach us how to boycott . . . again. We miss him. |
