Congressman Gene Green -- A True Friend
Author Joe Drexler
Date 00/02/03/16:25

Congressman Gene Green promised us that he would take the issue of the Crown "madness" against workers to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and on national television. He did just that yesterday.

With so much cynicism out there about politics in general, it was heartening to see a politician speaking out, unafraid and very forthrightly. He talked not only about the unjust suffering of workers, but stressed that workers were still standing strong against this barbaric company. He told a national audience that workers were taking the fight to the public in the form of the boycott -- in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

The news that there have been few, if any, real offers for Crown (or the offers that were very low)shows clearly that our campaign and boycott have been effective.

Crown should be attractive to investors, considering its $70 million market cap (low stock price) and the possibility of replacing failing management with persons who are competent. The lack of offers is clearly a function of the PACE campaign, being led by our members. The message is a also clear -- settle the labor dispute if shareholders are ever to get fair value for the company. The only public offer to acquire the company stated that a settlement of the labor dispute must be a condition of the acquisition.

Today's Washington Post (2/3/00)states, "the financially troubled company is under intense pressure from its union -- which is staging a nationwide boycott since Crown locked-out refinery workers from Texas."

The road to save your company, Mr. Rosenberg is through the UNION.

On the Fourth Anniversay of this brutal lockout, we deeply appreciate Congressman Green's speech and his call, "to end this madness." Congressman Green has not forgotten where he came from.
