CONVENTION CENTER EXPANSION
Let voters decide

Now that City Council has been packed to support funding Convention Center expansion, we call for a vote of the people to ratify whether Pueblo should finance the issue.

The original bond issue for the Convention Center passed in 1994.

In 2004 voters rejected using 3.30% of existing sales and use tax revenue to pay down PURA bonds to finance convention center expansion.

In 2008 voters rejected, 57 to 43, using downtown vendors' fees to pay $8 million in new debt for convention center expansion.

The proposal today is to loan out PEDCO incentive money to finance the latest expansion plan. The original City Council voted twice to deny the loan. Another financing mechanism should invoke another public vote.
