Indian election

A LOT OF commentators on the left have said that Modi's election is a victory for neoliberal corporate interests.

This is not necessarily false, but somewhat misses the point.

The outgoing Singh administration was quite thoroughly bought and paid for by the corporate elite. It is hard to see what Modi can offer them that they haven't been able to get from the supposedly left-leaning Congress government.

If you want a US analog to Modi, the only thing I can think of is the Tea Party. Modi represents a particularly virulent form of right-wing populism, not corporatism.
